Sort of a dark and sad title huh?
Well, the title is about government. That makes it even more dark and sad. Let me expound.
Many hate government. Whether its for taking money away or for intruding into one's personal life, everybody seems to have a reason to hate government.
Two big news events have made this clear to me.
Over the weekend, the biggest gathering of conservatives outside of NASCAR gathered for the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. What did they scream about? Socialism. That government is too big. Government should not take money from its citizens. Barack Obama is robbing you blind.
Earlier today, a large group protested in Raleigh over gay marriage. Guess what? They're conservatives. So what do they want? They want the government to pass a law that bans people from doing something that they want to do. I imagine there was somebody who was at both the CPAC and this protest. If I were a real reporter, I'd try to find this person and interview him or her.
So, you have a group of people that believes it is a crime for government to take a citizen's money. This same group, does not believe it is a crime to make a person be somebody that they are not.
Think about it.
If you do not allow gay people to marry. If you force them to believe that heterosexuality is the only moral option. If you coerce a homosexual to marry a person of the opposite sex. What will happen?
I believe you will have homosexuals living shadow lives. They will marry a person they do not love. They will have sex with people, even though they would rather not consent to it?
Wait? They will have sex with people, even though they do not consent?
What is that?
Rape is sexual intercourse with a partner that does not consent.
These protesters are advocating rape.
So, it appears to me, that everybody is a crook. What kind of crook is based on their political ideology.
Liberals are robbers.
Conservatives are rapists.
Bottom Line?
Perhaps it is a stretch. But did it provoke thought? I hope.

Two Things
Just a couple of things that I have been thinking about...
First, the stimulus package. Many scream that they have followed all of the rules. They should not not have to pay for those who did not follow all of the rules. If I live responsibly and my neighbor does not, that is his fault, not mine. While I generally agree that everybody should take care of themselves, "we" are not paying for the bill. The United States will need to borrow money to pay for the stimulus. So, in reality, China is paying for your irresponsible neighbor.
Second, living in Charlotte, one of the biggest complaints I hear is that the city does not get its fair share from the state government. Sort of a Charlotte/Raleigh rivalry. A big issue is highway funding as cited in this article from the Charlotte Observer. Here is my problem with these complaints. The people responsible for bringing state money to Charlotte are the state representatives and state senators from Charlotte. If they do not do their job, they should be questioned. But, those who complain likely do not even know who their elected officials are. They just choose to blame Raleigh.
That's all.

Terrorizing Terror
I'm through with terrorism.
As mentioned in a previous post, George W. Bush's claim to a legacy is based in the fact that he has kept America safe since 9/11.
You know my opinion on that.
So, as public debate turns to Bush's legacy, the general conservative view is this is why he should be considered a successful president. In the media, rather it is newspapers, television, radio or blogs, the conservative pundit takes this claim and pushes that President Obama must maintain the Bush policies or another attack will be all his fault.
Fucking bullshit.
I apologize for the language but that's my best response. Nobody hows exactly how, if, when, or why there may be another attack on our country. Sure, there is plenty of speculation, and plenty that can be done.
But, to put the blame of a possible terrorist attack on Barack Obama, before it even happens, is absolute nonsense (Further proof of the neocon infatuation with pre-emptive strikes). Conservatives blamed 9/11 on Clinton's failures. In reality, the failure to prevent 9/11 falls at the feet of Bush's administration as well as Clinton's. If another attack happens, it will partially be the fault of the Obama administration and it will also partially be the fault of the Bush administration.
Terrorism should be debated with plenty of vigor. But, it should also be debated with clear heads and rational thinking. Both sides of the argument often have valid points but overshadow them with unnecessary rhetoric about both fear and morality.
The one thing you cannot allow terrorism to do is control your life. Because, then it does not matter whether a plane is flown into a building, those who wish to terrorize you have already won.
So, I will not let terrorism control me.
Bottom Line? I'm done with terrorism.

Crank it up Rabbit
Politicians never fail to baffle me. Let's turn our heads to the headlines of the upcoming week.
Bush leaves, Obama arrives.
George W. Bush spent the past two months legacy creating. He poured over his decisions and sifted through the news to come up with this nugget. "America hasn't been attacked since 9/11."
George, keeping America safe is a major accomplishment for any president. You failed. Which is really fine, its unfair to place the blame of 9/11 on George Bush. But, George the last time we were attacked on our own soil at this level was Pearl Harbor. That was 1941. Being attacked on our soil is simply not something happens very often.
Let's say, just for kicks because there is no real proof, that George Bush is the reason we have not been attacked since 9/11. How did he do it? Through a "War on Terror." A war that has specifically been fought in Iraq.
One key way many feel safe is by not dying. On 9/11, 2,998 people were killed. In Iraq, 4226 Americans have been killed. That means 1,228 more American have died in Iraq, than on 9/11. Less Americans would be dead if we just let 9/11 happen again. I won't even mention the amount of Iraqis that have been killed, because nobody is certain. I am certain that it is higher than 4,226 thus higher than 2,998.
Now, its Barack's turn.
But, Iraq is no longer making headlines, its the economy dummy (can't use stupid, afraid of lawsuit from James Carville). The economy is struggling. That is an understatement. So, one should expect a toned down inauguration? Of course not. It will be the most expensive inauguration ever Rabbit. We need to party. While I understand that presidents deal in billions and trillions, an inauguration that costs hundreds of millions is a bit pretentious. That is an understatement.
What angers me more is that, with the exception of a few right wingers like Rush Limbaugh, few Americans are outraged by the excess. I hate agreeing with Rush Limbaugh.
No, instead of calling for a low key event, millions of people will flock to Washington DC as if the Beatles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tupac, and Jesus himself came down from heaven for a concert. Apparently, they did not get the memo about the economy. The inauguration is on a Tuesday. Most people work on Tuesday. So, in this struggling economy, millions of people will decide to miss work to see somebody who was chosen to fix the economy.
Even in a strong economy, I still am concerned that millions would come to this inauguration. Sure, it is historic, but if one really wants to be involved there are better ways. For one, actually get involved. Driving or flying to Washington DC and getting a hotel room probably costs a pretty penny. Why not use that money to stimulate the green economy? Going to DC will also take up a lot time. Many think I will say that time should be used volunteering. Volunteering sounds fine but really? Just go to work. Once you're there, work.
Bottom Line? The problems of the United States can be solved if two things happen. If we work hard and think. Easier said than done.
